Secure your surfing basics 1-2-3-4

This is the quick guide for those who do not want to learn a lot of information just so they can use their computers with security and stability.

  1. Use your head.  If you want a list of behaviors and practical tips read the Secure Surfing Best Practices, including using the safer web browser and email programs, Firefox and Thunderbird.
  2. Sign up for and install Anonymizer Safe Surfing Suite™ .
  3. Change your DNS to OpenDNS — it’s free and set-it-and forget it protection. You do not even have to register an account, just set your DNS servers to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
  4. Install the free version of Avast! or buy one of the commercial options listed on the Security Software Page.

If you do these four things — use your head (Firefox & Thunderbird), sign up for Anonymizer, change your dns settings to OpenDNS and install Avast! You will be well protected without having to become an expert or spend a fortune.

Note that we have not included on the minimum list buying or installing a firewall.  If you want to keep things basic, you can go with the Windows firewall included with the operating system. It does not provide as strong protection as Outpost Firewall or one of the commercial options and you will not get any decent support from Microsoft, BUT with the other 4 measures it should be rare for you to need additional protection.

We would like everyone to use a strong firewall such as Outpost, but if you just won’t go to the trouble, then your exposure will still be limited.

Also note: These basics do not do a good job of identity protection beyond hiding your IP address and keeping you away from known fraud/malware sites. Identity protection cannot be done on your computer alone and requires action on email addresses and web site registrations. If you just want to get those things taken care you can join the Secure Surfing Organization, or learn how to do it for yourself at little or not cost. The learning part is not that difficult, it just takes time to take all the necessary steps once you have learned what they are.
